Thomas Attwood's Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in F major are canticle settings of exceptional quality that have been unavailable since their original publication in 1853. Written in 1796 for the Chapel Royal and sung at the state funeral of Admiral Lord Nelson, these settings combine Georgian elegance with dramatic flair in an English cathedral idiom.
The first major release in Catchword's Thomas Attwood series, recovering works that have remained in cathedral libraries for nearly two centuries. Attwood (1765–1838) studied composition with Mozart in Vienna and served as organist of St. Paul's Cathedral for over forty years. Graceful, melodically inventive, and eminently singable, Attwood's cathedral music deserves a place in the standard repertoire.
