Thomas Attwood, the "son of a coal merchant who had musical tastes," became a favorite student of Mozart and eventually organist of St Paul's Cathedral, where he is buried under the organ. As composer to the Chapel Royal, Attwood wrote anthems for the coronations of King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria. A number of Attwood's other anthems, including this wonderfully cozy setting of the collect for Epiphany, were saved from obscurity by Attwood's godson and protegé Thomas Attwood Walmisley, who published them after the composer's death.

O GOD, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles: Mercifully grant that we, who know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
